City of Song: Call for Proposals from Community Choirs

The Winnipeg Arts Council and Manitoba Choral Association are looking for ideas to celebrate Winnipeg’s 150th birthday through group singing and choral events. We are engaging Winnipeg’s Community Choirs to create opportunities for citizens to engage in the power of singing with friends and neighbours across the city. Our aim is to bring Winnipeggers together in a celebration of community, history, harmony, intercultural collaboration, and hope for the future. And we want YOU to be involved!

We are looking for ideas that:

• celebrate Winnipeg and the people who live here;

• provide opportunities for citizens to engage in singing;

• involve music in any form, from any culture;

• will help you add to or enhance your existing programs; and

• take place between April 15 and December 31, 2024.

Community singsongs and pub singalongs, choral concerts, musical collaborations, compositions, or random acts of singing in public places are just a few ideas, but we want to hear yours!

The Winnipeg Arts Council will provide grants of $500, $1,000, or $1,500 for selected City of Song projects. Funding is open only to Winnipeg-based community choirs. Projects done in partnership with other choirs are also welcome!

To be considered for support, please submit the following information to MCA:

• Name and contact information of your choir

• A brief description of your idea or activity

• A brief description (500 words max) of how the funds will be used. Please include your requested grant amount of $500, $1,000, or $1,500.

Preference will be given to proposals with potential to reach the greatest number of Winnipeggers and that take place in different areas of the city. Proposals will be selected jointly by Manitoba Choral Association and the Winnipeg Arts Council.

Submit your ideas by Friday, April 12, 2024 to

Decisions will be communicated to applicants by April 30.
